RG&E, NYSEG bills higher than normal: What happened?

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

Notice a higher-than-normal energy bill recently? Customers in RG&E and NYSEG’s coverage area have been reporting high energy bills the last 30 days.

The companies, operated by Avangrid, attribute the increase to surging supply costs and extreme cold rather than their own rates, according to reporting by News10NBC this week. While these companies manage delivery and billing, they pass supplier costs directly to consumers.

Frigid temperatures force heating systems to work harder, raising energy consumption even if thermostat settings remain unchanged. The cost of gas and electricity has risen sharply, and utilities stress they do not profit from these supply charges.

To help struggling customers, RG&E and NYSEG offer budget billing and payment plans. Consumers are encouraged to explore assistance programs if they face difficulties covering their bills.
