A Guatemalan man has been sentenced to 14 months in federal prison for illegally reentering the United States after being deported just a year earlier, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York announced Wednesday.
Enrique Diaz-Perez, 38, was convicted of illegal reentry in 2024 and deported in February of that year. However, he was found in Syracuse on August 27, 2024, and arrested while working in Little Falls, New York. Acting U.S. Attorney Daniel Hanlon and Thomas P. Brophy, Field Office Director for ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations in Buffalo, confirmed that Diaz-Perez will be deported again after serving his sentence.
Diaz-Perez’s history of removals dates back to 2009, when he was deported following a Massachusetts conviction for assault with a dangerous weapon. His latest sentence includes an additional four months for violating the conditions of his supervised release from his previous illegal reentry conviction.
The case was investigated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s ICE-ERO unit and prosecuted by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul Tuck.
