Ellen Hughes, a longtime advocate for education, literacy, and community service, has been named the Seneca County Women’s Coalition’s 2024 Woman of the Year. The Waterloo resident will be honored at a celebratory dinner on March 15 at the Lux Hotel in Seneca Falls.
A retired Spanish teacher, Hughes has dedicated her life to volunteerism and leadership, embodying the Coalition’s mission of “service above self.” She has served as both President and Vice President of the Seneca County Literacy Committee, working to improve literacy and educational opportunities throughout the county.
Hughes’ involvement in Rotary International is extensive, having served as President of her local chapter, District 7120 Governor, and in several other leadership roles. She founded the Waterloo Rotary Youth Interact Club, which engages young people in service projects such as Pennies for Polio Plus and holiday food drives. In recognition of her contributions, she has been named a multi-Paul Harris Fellow, one of Rotary’s highest honors.
Beyond Rotary, Hughes is an active member of St. Francis-St. Clare Parish and the Catholic Daughters, regularly volunteering at St. Mary’s breakfast program. She has received the Catholic Charities of the Finger Lakes Sharing the Light Award and continues to serve on its board as an advisor.
Her dedication to children and families is evident through her work with the Seneca County Children’s Committee, the Seneca County Christmas Project, and Trevor’s Backpack Program, which provides food to students in need. She has also served as a member and chair of the Waterloo School Board.
The March 15 dinner, held in the Chancellor Ballroom of the Lux Hotel, will raise funds for Hughes’ chosen charity, Trevor’s Backpack Program. Reservations for the event are open until March 10, and congratulatory ads can be placed in the program to honor her achievements.
