During the investigation, authorities determined that earlier in the day, Byler allegedly pointed a sawed-off shotgun at the victim and prevented them from leaving. Troopers later found a break-action shotgun with an 18-inch barrel behind the residence.

Byler was taken into custody and charged with multiple offenses, including first-degree criminal contempt, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, second-degree menacing, and second-degree unlawful imprisonment. He was processed at SP Painted Post before being transported to Steuben County Jail. His CAP arraignment was scheduled for February 17 at 8:00 a.m.
