Seneca Waterways Scouts set sail for high adventure at Florida Sea Base

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

Forty Scouts and leaders from the Seneca Waterways Council are heading to the Florida Keys for an unforgettable high-adventure experience at the BSA Sea Base from February 15-22. The contingent, composed of five crews, will explore the marine environment while building leadership skills and participating in conservation efforts.

The Scouts, aged 12-16, represent multiple troops from across the council, including several Eagle Scouts. Accompanied by adult leaders ranging from 18 to 58 years old, the group consists of four male crews and one female crew. They will spend a week at the Brinton Environmental Center on Summerland Key, engaging in outdoor activities designed to challenge and inspire.

Their adventure includes participation in two immersive Sea Base programs:

  • Keys Adventure: A multi-activity experience featuring snorkeling, sailing, fishing, paddleboarding, kayaking, and an overnight stay on Scout-only Munson Island. The Scouts will also explore Key West, engage in team-building exercises, and contribute to conservation service projects.
  • Marine Eco Adventure: A hands-on program focused on coral reef restoration, marine habitat studies, and environmental data collection, in addition to classic Sea Base activities.

“Sea Base is a wonderful opportunity for our scouts to explore the marine habitat of the Keys, learn about the history, and experience the water from behind a snorkel mask and aboard different vessels,” said contingent leader Greg Gresock.

Planning for this trip began in Fall 2023, with Scouts completing swim checks, snorkeling certification, sailing training with Sea Scouts on Irondequoit Bay, and physical conditioning. Crew leaders also worked on gear preparation, leadership roles, and team bonding exercises to ensure a successful experience.

The contingent departs for Florida on February 15, spending their first night camping at Scout Camp Jackson Sawyer before arriving at Sea Base on February 16. After a week of adventure, they will return home on February 22, bringing back memories and stories of their journey.
