Former Avon police chief pleads guilty to embezzlement

  • Staff Report

Former Avon Police Chief Joseph Geer has pleaded guilty to theft of funds related to a federal program, admitting he misused time designated for his role as a school resource officer (SRO). Instead of fulfilling his SRO duties under a $10,000 contract, he had another officer cover for him while he performed police chief responsibilities.

Geer, who resigned last April following an FBI probe, now faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. FBI officials condemned his actions as a betrayal of public trust.

His sentencing is scheduled for June 5.
