Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (NY-24) has introduced legislation to designate June 14 as a federal holiday, recognizing both President Donald J. Trump’s birthday and Flag Day.
The Trump’s Birthday and Flag Day Holiday Establishment Act would permanently enshrine the date as a national holiday, honoring the former president and the adoption of the Stars and Stripes in 1777.
“No modern president has been more pivotal for our country than Donald J. Trump,” Tenney stated, calling him “the most consequential President in modern American history.” She credited him with major policy achievements, including brokering the Abraham Accords and championing what she described as the largest tax relief package in U.S. history.
Tenney likened Trump’s birthday to that of George Washington, whose birthday is a federal holiday, and framed the proposed designation as a way to celebrate both Trump’s presidency and the American flag. She emphasized that, with the country approaching its 250th anniversary, this move would cement Trump’s legacy and highlight the flag’s national significance.
The bill faces an uphill battle in Congress, where proposals for new federal holidays typically require broad bipartisan support. Currently, June 14 is observed as Flag Day but is not a paid federal holiday.
