New York’s brownfield cleanup program marks 21 years of success

New York State’s Brownfield Cleanup Program (BCP) continues its mission of environmental restoration, with 61 sites cleaned and 71 new ones added in 2024, according to the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). The initiative focuses on repurposing contaminated properties while boosting local economies. More than half of this year’s completed sites will be developed into thousands of affordable housing units.

The program, active since 2003, incentivizes developers to clean up polluted sites for community use, including residential and commercial projects. Key redevelopments in 2024 include Yonkers’ St. Clair Hotel site, Brooklyn’s Rogers Snyder, and Queens’ Willets Point, among others. These efforts align with Governor Kathy Hochul’s affordable housing and environmental goals.

DEC officials, alongside state agencies, emphasize the program’s role in revitalizing underserved neighborhoods. With ongoing state investment and tax incentives, New York continues transforming polluted land into thriving, sustainable communities.
