Blue Cross Blue Shield will soon pay out $2.67 billion following a lawsuit that accused the insurer of violating antitrust laws by limiting competition and inflating premiums. The lawsuit, filed in 2013, was settled without a final verdict, though the company denied wrongdoing.
Customers who had coverage between February 2008 and October 2020 needed to file a claim by November 2021 to receive a payout. About six million claims were submitted, with payments averaging $333 each. After attorney fees and administrative costs, $1.9 billion remains for distribution.
Payments are being sent out gradually via email notifications. The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association oversees multiple insurance providers across the U.S., offering coverage for individuals, families, and businesses.
