AG James joins fight against NIH funding cuts

New York Attorney General Letitia James, with 21 other attorneys general, is suing the Trump administration and NIH over a sudden cap on research funding. The new policy limits “indirect cost” reimbursements to 15%, jeopardizing critical research infrastructure and potentially leading to layoffs, lab closures, and suspended clinical trials.

James emphasized that the policy endangers research on diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s. The coalition argues the change violates federal law by bypassing required Congressional authorization and proper notice.

If implemented, New York institutions could lose $850 million, with the SUNY system alone facing a $78 million shortfall, threatening major biomedical projects statewide.
