Members of the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) rallied in Rochester on Thursday, demanding changes to the state retirement system to better retain workers.
They highlighted disparities between pension tiers, with Tier Five and Six employees facing higher contributions, later retirement ages, and reduced benefits compared to earlier tiers.
Andrew Jordan of Monroe One BOCES emphasized the inequity, noting how these tiers hinder recruitment across professions, including educators and municipal workers.
Assemblymember Josh Jensen and Governor Kathy Hochul’s administration acknowledged the issue, pointing to ongoing reforms in the 2025 budget aimed at improving Tier Six benefits.
