Wednesday night featured another full slate of Wayne-Finger Lakes high school basketball games, with a historic milestone achieved in Lyons.
Senior Jayla Bell entered the matchup against North Rose-Wolcott needing just eight points to become Lyons’ all-time leading scorer. She wasted no time, reaching the mark in the first quarter and surpassing her stepbrother, 2019 graduate Justice Smith, who previously held the record with 1,987 points. Bell’s remarkable night didn’t stop there. In the third quarter, she joined the 2000-point club just over two years after reaching 1,000 career points.
Smith, who plays for the Niagara University men’s basketball team, was unable to attend due to his team currently being on the road in Boston. However, he did congratulate her on social media saying, “I want to congratulate my lil sis on breaking my old record and becoming the all-time leading scorer at Lyons and scoring 2000. Keep being great.”
