William Smith basketball’s fourth-quarter rally falls short in loss to Ithaca

The William Smith basketball team staged a furious comeback attempt in the fourth quarter, outscoring Ithaca 22-4, but the host Bombers held on for a 60-45 Liberty League win this evening. Senior Molly Walsh scored a team-high 11 points to lead the Herons.

Walsh was 3-of-6 from the floor with a 3-pointer and 4-for-4 at the free throw line. Sophomore Miranda Martin added nine points and classmate Giana Lobozzo chipped in eight points. Martin and Labozzo shared game-high honors with three steals apiece. First-year Bridget McCleary pulled down a team-high eight boards.

Ithaca got a game-high 14 points from Anya Watkins and Grace McNamara contributed 10 points. Tori Drevna grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Ithaca (10-7, 9-1 LL) scored the first eight points of the game and outscored William Smith 16-5 in the opening 10 minutes.
  • The Herons cut their deficit to 10 midway through the second quarter, but the Bombers countered with 10 unanswered points on the way to a 33-14 halftime lead.
  • Ithaca pushed its lead to a game-high 33 points by the end of the third quarter before William Smith’s offense was able to push back in the fourth quarter.
  • Over the final 10 minutes, the Herons shot 50% from the floor and went 4-of-6 from beyond the arc, while limiting the Bombers to 1-of-14 shooting from the floor.
  • Lobozzo and Martin each scored five points in the fourth quarter.
