Prattsburgh Central School District was labeled “susceptible to fiscal stress” under New York Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli’s monitoring system. This designation highlights its financial vulnerability due to low fund reserves, operating deficits, and liquidity challenges. Prattsburgh was among 22 districts identified statewide for the 2023-24 school year, an increase from the previous year.
DiNapoli attributes the relatively low number of distressed schools to increased state and federal aid, including pandemic-related funding. However, he warns that with most relief aid spent, schools need balanced budgets to avoid future financial strain.
Across the state, 3.3% of reporting districts were flagged for fiscal stress, excluding those in major cities like Buffalo and Syracuse. Only two districts were classified as having significant stress, with four in moderate stress and 16, including Prattsburgh, deemed susceptible.
