The City of Auburn has filed a petition to acquire the long-neglected Schine Theater after years of inactivity by its owner, Schines Theater LLC, according to The Citizen. Despite past promises of progress, including asbestos remediation, no significant rehabilitation has occurred since the property’s 2018 purchase.
The city certified the theater as abandoned in 2022 after stalled communications and unpaid taxes.
Officials have emphasized the urgency to transfer ownership, citing state grants and a need for swift action. However, challenges include state preservation covenants requiring approval for ownership changes.
