Onondaga Lake hosts bald eagle excursions February 2

  • Staff Report

The Onondaga Lake Conservation Corps is inviting nature enthusiasts to witness one of New York’s premier wildlife spectacles as dozens of bald eagles gather along the restored shoreline of Onondaga Lake. Two guided excursions are scheduled for Sunday, February 2, from 10 to 11 a.m. and noon to 1 p.m.

The half-mile walks along the Onondaga Creekwalk and lake shoreline will explore habitats that attract not only bald eagles but also thousands of waterfowl and other wintering bird species. Staff from the Montezuma Audubon Center, Onondaga Audubon, and conservation partners will share insights into bird behavior, local wildlife, and the critical role wetlands play in supporting the lake’s ecosystem.

“Onondaga Lake is one of the best places in New York to see bald eagles during the winter months,” said Chris Lajewski, director of the Montezuma Audubon Center and the Onondaga Lake Conservation Corps. He highlighted the lake’s restored wetlands, which provide abundant fish and roosting areas for eagles. “We welcome everyone to experience this conservation success that is unlike any other,” Lajewski added.

Onondaga Lake, designated as an Audubon Important Bird Area, serves as a vital resource for many species during the cold months. Winter visitors often include bald eagles, hooded mergansers, American black ducks, common goldeneyes, and more.

The tours will take place on a flat, paved trail that may be snow-covered. Binoculars, spotting scopes, and field guides will be available for participants. The walk begins at the Onondaga Creekwalk trail near Destiny USA in Syracuse. Space is limited, and advance registration is required.

Tickets cost $10 for adults and $7.50 for children. Registration links for the morning and afternoon sessions are available online, or call 315-365-3588 or email [email protected] for additional information.
