Bird flu detected in Georgia poultry flock

A commercial poultry flock in Elbert County, Georgia, has tested positive for the H5N1 strain of bird flu, marking the first such case in the state since the outbreak began in 2022.

The Georgia Department of Agriculture has suspended all poultry events to prevent further spread.

Georgia’s poultry industry, a key economic driver, faces significant risks, according to Agriculture Commissioner Tyler Harper.

Efforts are underway to contain the disease, which previously affected smaller flocks and has resulted in over 400 global deaths since 2003.
