Corning man held on $5K bail after high-speed chase in stolen vehicle

A Corning man faces multiple charges after allegedly stealing a vehicle and leading police on a high-speed chase while under the influence of drugs. Joseph W. Hannacker, Jr., 30, was arrested Wednesday following an investigation by the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities say Hannacker stole a vehicle in Corning and drove it through the Village and Town of Addison. When deputies attempted to pull him over, Hannacker allegedly refused to stop, reaching speeds over 100 mph, driving on a sidewalk in Addison, and ultimately crashing into a guardrail on state Route 417.

The chase ended when the vehicle was disabled remotely by OnStar. Hannacker was treated for minor injuries at a medical facility before being taken into custody.

He now faces a slew of charges, including criminal possession of stolen property in the third degree and criminal mischief in the second degree, both class D felonies. Additional charges include unlawful fleeing of a police officer, reckless driving, driving while impaired by drugs, and operating without a license, among others.

Hannacker was arraigned and placed in the Steuben County Jail on $5,000 cash bail.
