Attorney General James sues Brooklyn furniture store for consumer fraud

  • Staff Report

New York Attorney General Letitia James has filed a lawsuit against 1StopBedrooms, a Brooklyn-based furniture store, accusing it of defrauding consumers through deceptive practices. The lawsuit, announced January 15, follows an investigation prompted by hundreds of consumer complaints about exorbitant fees, false advertising, and poor customer service.

The Attorney General’s Office alleges that 1StopBedrooms charged customers steep cancellation fees despite advertising “hassle-free” returns, delivered damaged goods without proper refunds or exchanges, and misrepresented delivery timelines. Customers were also subjected to additional fees for incomplete orders and pressured to withdraw complaints to receive refunds.

“Furnishing a home can be expensive, and the last thing families should have to worry about is receiving furniture that is damaged, missing pieces, or excessively late,” said Attorney General James. “My office received hundreds of complaints against 1StopBedrooms for cheating New Yorkers, and today we are taking action to stop this fraud and help consumers get back what they are owed.”

According to the investigation, the store often advertised furniture as in stock with quick shipping dates but failed to deliver on time. Customers who canceled their orders faced a 15% restocking fee and a $2.25 per pound return shipping charge, in addition to losing delivery fees. In many cases, refunds were incomplete or not provided at all.

Attorney General James is seeking restitution for affected consumers, civil penalties, and an injunction to halt the company’s practices.

This case is the latest in James’s efforts to protect consumers. In 2024, her office recovered $4.8 million for customers improperly charged by SmileDirectClub and secured $2.25 million from Nissan dealerships that overcharged consumers.

Consumers who believe they have been deceived by 1StopBedrooms or other businesses are encouraged to contact the Attorney General’s Office online or at 1-800-771-7755.
