Legislators are divided. Advocates, like Assemblymember Latrice Walker, argue reforms are effective but need improved evidence systems, while Republicans blame policies for rising crime. Sen. Zellnor Myrie introduced a bill to refine discovery processes, balancing efficiency and accountability.
Hochul also outlined plans to create a multi-agency crime analysis hub and expand law enforcement recruitment. Critics, including Senate Minority Leader Rob Ortt, doubt the changes will tackle the root causes of crime.
