Buffalo will host the World Canal Conference 2025 (WCC2025) this September, bringing together experts, policymakers, and canal enthusiasts from over 14 countries to address the future of inland waterways.
Scheduled for September 21-25, the event marks the bicentennial of the Erie Canal, a National Historic Landmark credited with transforming global trade and transportation. WCC2025 will feature discussions, field activities, and cultural celebrations aimed at tackling challenges like climate change, waterway preservation, and sustainable tourism.
“This conference is a unique opportunity to exchange innovative strategies that can benefit communities worldwide,” said Sharon Leighton, President of Inland Waterways International.
Attendees will enjoy a variety of events, including the recreation of Governor DeWitt Clinton’s historic canal journey on the replica Seneca Chief, guided tours, and presentations by international leaders in waterway management.
The Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, New York State Canal Corporation, and other partners will host the forum, spotlighting New York’s waterway legacy.
