Syracuse safety Duce Chestnut to return next season

Syracuse safety Duce Chestnut announced Saturday that he will return to the Orange for the upcoming football season.

He shared the news on social media, stating he has “unfinished business” and made the decision after consulting with his family and coaches.

As a redshirt junior this past season, Chestnut recorded 62 tackles, five pass breakups, and one interception, ranking second on the team in tackles. He has completed four seasons, including a redshirt year at LSU, and still holds one year of eligibility.

Chestnut is one of two starting safeties expected to return for the Orange, alongside Devin Grant. Alijah Clark Jr., however, has exhausted his eligibility and will participate in the East-West Shrine Bowl, a key NFL Draft showcase.

Pro Football Focus rated Chestnut as Syracuse’s sixth-highest-graded defender last season (fourth among those with significant playing time) and the 19th-best safety in the ACC among players with at least 450 snaps. His return strengthens the Orange’s secondary for the upcoming season.
