LA fires leave 11 dead, 12,000 structures destroyed

Wildfires in Los Angeles County have burned over 36,000 acres, destroying 12,300 structures and displacing more than 150,000 residents.

The Palisades Fire, the largest in the city’s history, alone has scorched 20,000 acres. Firefighters, supported by international aid, made progress Friday, but officials warned that strong winds could worsen conditions.

Governor Gavin Newsom announced an investigation into water supply issues that hampered firefighting, while President Joe Biden pledged federal funding to cover 100% of response costs for 180 days.

Meanwhile, residents grapple with hazardous air quality, curfews, and devastating losses, as recovery efforts begin through state, federal, and community relief initiatives.
