Prosecutors say a 53-year-old Bath resident was sentenced for a 2023 standoff where he fired a gun a cops in Steuben County.
Larry J. Schoonover was sentenced to 55 years to life in prison for a 2023 armed standoff where he fired at law enforcement officers. The sentence includes 35 years to life for attempted murder of police officers and 20 years for criminal firearm use, served consecutively.
The six-hour standoff began as a domestic dispute, with Schoonover firing shots inside his home before barricading himself. He later shot at officers, who returned fire, ending the ordeal when Schoonover was injured.
Prosecutors highlighted Schoonover’s history of similar conduct and intent to kill. District Attorney Brooks Baker stated the sentence delivers justice and sends a clear message against such actions.
