A Naples man was arrested for driving while intoxicated following a rollover accident on West Avenue in the town of Middlesex early Sunday morning.
Stephen J. Shay, 23, was driving southbound on West Avenue at an unsafe speed when he failed to negotiate a curve, causing his vehicle to veer into a ditch, strike an embankment, and overturn. The accident occurred at approximately 12:09 a.m.
Yates County deputies investigating the crash reported that Shay showed signs of intoxication. He was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital with upper-body injuries. His passenger, 18-year-old Nevaeh J. Skidmore, also of Naples, suffered lower-body injuries and was hospitalized.
Shay has been charged with DWI under common law, aggravated unlicensed operation (second degree), open container, moving from a lane unsafely, failure to wear a seat belt, and unsafe speed. Deputies say additional charges may follow as the investigation continues.
The Yates County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Middlesex Fire Department, Middlesex Ambulance, and Ontario County Advanced Life Support (Medic 21).
Shay was issued an appearance ticket and is expected to appear in court at a later date.
