Hochul says universal child care is the end goal in legislative push for more facilities

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced a new coalition of business leaders, child care providers, and fiscal experts to explore strategies for universal child care in New York.

At an event in Brooklyn, Hochul emphasized the state’s recent investments and proposed $110 million in the upcoming budget to build and sustain child care facilities, targeting areas like Central New York and the North Country with the greatest shortages.

Advocates are pushing for more immediate action, calling for a multibillion-dollar universal system funded by higher taxes on corporations and the wealthy. Hochul, opposed to raising taxes, aims to balance these demands with ongoing budget negotiations ahead of the April 1 deadline.
