Meta announced it will eliminate its third-party fact-checking program on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, replacing it with a user-driven system called Community Notes, similar to X’s model. CEO Mark Zuckerberg framed the move as a return to “free expression,” acknowledging potential increases in misinformation as a trade-off.
The decision comes ahead of President-elect Donald Trump’s second term, with Meta aligning more closely with conservative priorities. Trust and safety operations will move from California to Texas, addressing concerns about internal bias. Additionally, content policies on divisive topics like immigration and gender will be relaxed.
These changes reflect Meta’s strategic shift to improve relations with Trump’s administration, including a $1 million donation to Trump’s inaugural fund and appointing Trump ally Dana White to its board.
