The FDA announced new guidelines to limit lead in baby foods, including jarred fruits, vegetables, yogurts, and cereals, aiming to reduce lead exposure in young children by 20-30%.
The voluntary guidelines set limits of 10 parts per billion for most fruits, vegetables, and yogurts, and 20 parts per billion for root vegetables and dry cereals. Part of the Closer to Zero initiative, the effort focuses on reducing contaminants like lead, arsenic, and mercury in baby foods.
While consumer advocates support the move, they argue it doesn’t address grain-based snacks, which may have higher lead levels.
