Cruise ships face worst year for stomach illnesses in a decade

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

In 2024, cruise ships experienced the highest number of gastrointestinal outbreaks in over a decade, with norovirus as the leading cause, according to CDC data.

The virus, highly contagious and persistent on surfaces, spreads easily in confined spaces like cruise ships. While outbreaks are quickly reported and managed through increased sanitation and passenger quarantines, 16 incidents were recorded last year, surpassing pre-pandemic numbers.

Health experts advise passengers to prioritize handwashing with soap and water, report symptoms promptly, and avoid cruising if feeling unwell to help prevent further spread.
