Public schools across New York will close on Jan. 29 in observance of the Lunar New Year, following a 2023 state law signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul. The legislation recognizes the cultural and historical significance of the holiday celebrated by many Asian communities.
Sponsored by Assemblyman William Colton and Sen. Brian Kavanagh, the law highlights the contributions of Asian-Americans and aims to promote diversity and inclusion. Assemblywoman Grace Lee emphasized the holiday’s role in combating anti-Asian hate and fostering cultural awareness.
This marks the first time the Lunar New Year, which falls on a weekday in 2025, will be observed as an official school holiday in New York.
