Geneva YMCA’s “Building What Matters” project progresses despite winter weather

Despite facing winter weather challenges, the Geneva YMCA’s “Building What Matters” Capital Improvement Project is making steady progress as the new year begins. Construction crews are advancing on the highly anticipated 11,000-square-foot addition on Norwood Avenue, marking a significant step forward in the multi-phase project.

Residents can already see the steel framework rising, a visible sign of transformation. Soon, the structure will be enclosed with walls and expansive glass windows, generously donated by Guardian Glass Industries. Once completed, the space will host areas for strength and fitness training, youth activities, senior programs, and educational classes, addressing the increasing demand for community facilities.

This addition represents the first phase of an extensive renovation project, which has been in the works for years. With an estimated timeline of about one year for completion, the new addition serves as a cornerstone for future enhancements.

Simultaneously, work is also beginning on phase four, which includes roof replacement and upgrades to the HVAC system. To streamline construction, renovations to the adult locker rooms have been moved up in the schedule. During this phase, adult members are being temporarily redirected to youth locker rooms, and the YMCA expressed gratitude for the community’s patience during these adjustments.

“The Geneva YMCA has served our community for nearly fifty years, and this long-awaited renovation is essential to meeting the growing needs of our members and providing an even better space for kids, families, and seniors,” said Charlie Evangelista, Chairman of the YMCA’s Building What Matters project. “We are excited that 2025 will be the year this extreme makeover becomes a reality.”

The YMCA remains operational throughout the construction, ensuring continued services and programs for the community. While substantial financial support from donors has made these upgrades possible, additional contributions are still welcomed to help realize the full potential of the project.
