The Geneva Business Improvement District’s No Butts Left Behind initiative has significantly reduced cigarette litter downtown, with a reported 73% decrease over six months, according to The Finger Lakes Times. Funded by a $5,600 Keep America Beautiful grant, the program included installing 12 receptacles, outreach efforts, and recycling cigarette butts through TerraCycle.
With support from The Arc Ontario and other partners, over 26,000 cigarette butts have been collected and recycled. Additionally, BID distributed pocket and auto ashtrays during community events like Cruisin’ Night to encourage responsible disposal.
The program will continue its efforts to maintain cleaner streets and a greener city, with ongoing partnerships and outreach initiatives planned for the coming year.
