Gov. Hochul prepares for important year in Albany

Gov. Kathy Hochul is set for a challenging year as she prioritizes affordability, public safety, and mental health in her upcoming State of the State address on Jan. 14. Her agenda, including a $3 billion proposal for tax relief and potential updates to school cell phone policies, will test her ability to work with a sometimes resistant Legislature.

Hochul also plans to address subway safety with stronger laws targeting violence and support for treatment programs. However, past hurdles, such as housing reform and congestion pricing, highlight the difficulties she faces in balancing competing interests.

The governor’s success will depend on her ability to leverage executive power during budget negotiations in this non-legislative election year.
