Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck and Heather Petrus of Cayuga Counseling recently represented their community at the Second Chance Act Conference in Philadelphia, sharing insights on their collaborative efforts to reduce recidivism and prepare incarcerated individuals for successful reentry into society.

Invited by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance and the Council of State Governments Justice Center, Schenck and Petrus participated in a panel discussion focused on the critical relationship between corrections facilities and community-based organizations.

The panel, attended by reentry professionals from across the country, highlighted the work being done in Cayuga County’s jail system, including programs led by Transition Coordinator Michelle Applebee and the facility’s custody staff.

In addition to speaking, Schenck and Petrus attended multiple sessions to learn about innovative reentry strategies being implemented nationwide.

Sheriff Schenck expressed gratitude for the ongoing partnership with Cayuga Counseling and the support from the CSG Justice Center and DOJ-BJA, emphasizing the importance of strong community collaboration in reducing recidivism rates and improving outcomes for formerly incarcerated individuals.
