A Brighton man has been arrested following a shooting on Phoenix Street in Canandaigua that left an innocent bystander injured late last week.
Leon Richard McDaniel, 28, was taken into custody by the Canandaigua Police Department on December 30 at approximately 5:28 p.m. He faces charges of first-degree assault, first-degree attempted assault, and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
Authorities allege that on December 28, around 11:45 p.m., McDaniel was involved in a physical altercation with another individual at a local bar. After being removed from the establishment by security, McDaniel reportedly brandished a firearm and fired several shots into a crowd on the street, striking a 38-year-old Town of Canandaigua woman who was not involved in the dispute. McDaniel fled the scene before law enforcement arrived.
Following an extensive investigation, McDaniel was located in Brighton, arrested, and transported to the Ontario County Jail for centralized arraignment.
The victim underwent surgery at Strong Memorial Hospital and has since been discharged. She is now recovering at home.
The Canandaigua Police Department received assistance in the investigation from the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office, the U.S. Marshals Services New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force-Rochester Division, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have indicated that additional charges may be forthcoming. Anyone with information is urged to contact Detective Catalfamo at (585) 337-2183 or via email at ACatalfamo@canandaiguanewyork.gov.
