  • Staff Report

The Yates County Legislature concluded its December 9 session with a series of resolutions addressing infrastructure, tax rates, and community services, ensuring the county remains on track heading into the new year.

Among the infrastructure improvements, the legislature approved a contract with Convergint for $63,700 to add door mechanisms to the county’s access control system, enhancing security across multiple facilities. They also amended contracts related to the Highway, Office of Emergency Services, and Public Health Facility Project, adjusting agreements with Building Innovation Group and Landry Mechanical by approximately $11,000 each due to scope changes.

In financial matters, legislators adopted the 2025 Equalization and Apportionment Table and finalized the county tax rates. These resolutions establish tax levies for each town, maintaining essential funding for local services and infrastructure.

The legislature also approved a contract renewal with GST BOCES for $500 to maintain the school tax billing program and authorized budget transfers to cover operational needs across various departments, including the Sheriff’s Office, Public Defender’s Office, and Social Services.

Public health and safety were also priorities. A public health employee was granted an unpaid leave of absence through the end of December, while the Sheriff’s Office secured funding to support a Child Passenger Safety grant and chemical dependency services at the county jail. Additionally, a public hearing was scheduled for December 23 to discuss adding viable agricultural lands to the Yates County Agricultural District.

The county also acknowledged the upcoming centennial year of the New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC) with a resolution celebrating the organization’s century-long commitment to county governments.

Looking forward, the Yates County Legislature’s next session is scheduled for December 23, 2024, where they will hold a public hearing on agricultural land additions and finalize year-end matters.
