Gov. Kathy Hochul signed legislation directing a statewide review of traumatic brain injury (TBI) services in response to systemic failures highlighted by a Hudson Valley family’s struggles accessing care.
The bill, led by Sen. Michelle Hinchey, tasks the Traumatic Brain Injury Services Coordinating Council with assessing care accessibility, regional disparities, and service efficiency, with findings due within a year. The legislation was inspired by Hannah Berryan’s decade-long battle for adequate treatment following a severe brain injury.
Advocates hope the review will address the lack of local care options, preventing families from seeking treatment out of state. Lawmakers see this as a first step toward improving resources and support for New Yorkers with TBIs.
