The Seneca Falls Town Board voted 3-2 on Dec. 3 to appoint Interlaken resident Peter Messmer as the town’s first director of public works. Supervisor Frank Schmitter proposed the new position to improve oversight of public works projects. Messmer, the sole applicant, was deemed “well qualified” by the Seneca County Personnel Office.
Messmer holds a civil and environmental engineering degree from Cornell University and works as a project manager for Keystone Architects, Engineers, and Surveyors. He begins Dec. 16 with an annual salary of $85,000.
Board member Kaitlyn Laskoski opposed the requirement for a four-year engineering degree, favoring candidates with hands-on experience in public works.
