Hornell has secured a second round of state grant funding, totaling $229,905, to upgrade its community camera system and add two license plate readers, city officials announced Thursday. This brings total grant funding for the Hornell Police Department to over $400,000.
The current camera system, installed in 2011, will be replaced with modern equipment to improve visibility and safety. Captain Michael Sexsmith praised the system for deterring crime and aiding investigations. The new license plate readers, mounted on two police vehicles, will help identify stolen vehicles, suspended licenses, and missing persons.
Additional security upgrades include new gun lockers and ballistic-resistant glass in the police station. Chief Ted Murray emphasized the importance of these measures to ensure a safer environment for the community.
