Trump’s ambitious tax agenda faces financial hurdles

President-elect Donald Trump’s sweeping tax cut promises, including eliminating taxes on tips and Social Security benefits, are facing scrutiny as advisers and Republican lawmakers weigh the financial impact. While the GOP’s control of Congress provides a path for Trump’s plans, the costly tax cuts from his first term—many set to expire next year—create a complex fiscal challenge. Renewing existing cuts alone could cost $4 trillion over a decade, with Trump’s new proposals potentially adding trillions more.

Some advisers suggest limiting the scope of Trump’s tax cuts to reduce the debt burden. Ideas to offset costs, like rescinding clean-energy credits or imposing new tariffs, are already meeting resistance among Republicans who value those programs. Meanwhile, Trump’s plan for tariffs faces legal and political obstacles, and even if implemented, may not cover the financial gap his tax cuts could create.

Further complicating Trump’s agenda is the soaring deficit, which reached $1.8 trillion last year. As Republicans face a potential debt ceiling showdown in early 2025, debates over fiscal discipline may reshape or limit Trump’s tax policies, despite hopes that economic growth could eventually offset the costs.
