Just hours before Election Day, U.S. intelligence agencies issued a warning that Russia and other foreign adversaries are stepping up efforts to undermine public confidence in the election process. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and the FBI cited Russian-led disinformation campaigns designed to “instill fear in voters” and increase political discord.
While foreign interference in U.S. elections is not new, officials stressed the unprecedented scale of disinformation this year. Jen Easterly, CISA’s director, confirmed that the agency has activated its election operations center to monitor threats, noting there’s no evidence of interference that could alter results. However, disinformation aimed at questioning the election’s legitimacy is expected to persist until the results are certified in January.
Videos falsely claiming election manipulation have already surfaced, and officials warned that these efforts will likely intensify post-election. Intelligence agencies reported that Russian disinformation is specifically aimed at fostering doubt around the certification process, highlighting Russia’s apparent preference for former President Donald Trump, who has signaled a shift in U.S. policy on Ukraine.
