All 213 seats in New York’s Legislature are up for grabs Tuesday, and while Democrats’ control of the Senate and Assembly is secure, their supermajorities could be at risk. Since 2020, Democrats have held supermajorities in both chambers, giving them unique leverage in negotiations with the governor.
Though they’ve yet to use their supermajority power to override a veto from Gov. Kathy Hochul, experts say the potential to do so strengthens their position.
Democratic turnout could bolster Assembly seats but sees the Senate’s two-thirds hold as less certain. Key races include Long Island’s District 4, where Sen. Monica Martinez faces a Republican challenger, and Central New York, where the vacancy left by Sen. John Mannion could give Republicans an edge.
