Harris team eyes potential attorney general picks amid election

As the election nears, Vice President Kamala Harris’s team is considering candidates for attorney general should she win the presidency, according to sources. Key names under discussion include North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, former Associate Attorney General Vanita Gupta, and U.S. Attorney Damian Williams.

Current Attorney General Merrick Garland has led significant investigations, including those involving former President Donald Trump, but may step down after more than three years in the role. Harris’s potential picks reflect her focus on justice reform and diversity, with Gupta known for her civil rights work and Williams being the first Black U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York.

While the Harris campaign declined to comment on specific personnel discussions, the selection of a new attorney general would be pivotal in shaping the Justice Department’s future direction, especially in light of ongoing legal matters involving Trump.
