NASCAR has officially recognized Bobby Allison as the winner of the 1971 Myers Brothers Memorial at Bowman Gray Stadium, bringing his career Cup Series win total to 85. The race, originally contested on August 6, 1971, was previously the only NASCAR race without an official winner. With this update, Allison now ranks fourth on the all-time Cup Series wins list.
“Recognizing Bobby’s victory after 53 years was the right thing to do,” said NASCAR chairman Jim France. Allison led 138 of the 200 laps in his Grand American Ford Mustang, but the win had not been counted in the official record—until now.
Allison, a NASCAR Hall of Famer and three-time Daytona 500 champion, now sits behind only Richard Petty, David Pearson, and Jeff Gordon in Cup Series wins.
