New York’s battleground race could threaten Democrats’ House hopes

The Central New York race between Republican Rep. Brandon Williams and Democratic state Sen. John Mannion is shaping up to be one of the most pivotal contests in the 2024 elections.

Williams, a freshman congressman, and Mannion, a two-term state senator, are locked in a battle where the outcome could determine the balance of power in the U.S. House.

Williams has focused on tying Mannion to unpopular Democratic policies in Albany, particularly bail reform.

Mannion, however, emphasizes his legislative achievements and criticizes the Republican-led Congress for its lack of progress. With tight polling and both candidates leaning on state-level records, the race could influence Democrats’ hopes of flipping the House in November.
