U.S. prosecutors revealed Wednesday that several prominent right-wing influencers, including Tim Pool, Dave Rubin, and Benny Johnson, were unknowingly part of a covert Russian influence operation. A Tennessee-based media company tied to the influencers was secretly funded by Russian state media employees, funneling nearly $10 million to promote Russia-friendly content that aligned with Kremlin interests, including amplifying U.S. domestic divisions.
The influencers, who have millions of followers and significant influence in conservative political discourse, were allegedly unaware of the operation. U.S. officials have previously warned of Russia’s attempts to influence the 2024 election, marking the third consecutive U.S. presidential election with such interference attempts.
Two Russian nationals, Kostiantyn Kalashnikov and Elena Afanasyeva, have been charged with conspiracy and violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act. Influencers like Pool and Johnson have denied any wrongdoing, stating they were victims of the alleged scheme.
