Senator Helming presented the New York State Senate Liberty Medal to Wendy Boyer, a teacher aide at Marcus Whitman Central School District, for her heroic actions that saved the life of a student. The Liberty Medal, the highest civilian honor awarded by the New York State Senate, recognizes individuals for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts.
On May 15, 2024, Boyer was assisting in the Middlesex Valley Primary School cafeteria when she was alerted to a choking student. Reacting swiftly, Boyer performed the Heimlich maneuver, successfully dislodging the food from the child’s throat and ensuring their safety.
Despite not being officially First Aid/CPR certified, Boyer had attended a Good Samaritan class, where she learned essential life-saving techniques. Her quick thinking and courage were praised by Senator Helming, who called her a hero and an example for all.
Boyer humbly downplayed her actions, stating, “I was just doing my job… It’s important that we all understand the skills and how important it is to help out.” Dr. Christopher Brown, Superintendent of Marcus Whitman CSD, emphasized the impact of her actions, noting that her swift response ensured a safe outcome for the student and brought peace of mind to the community.
