In recognition of her quick-thinking and bravery, Wendy Boyer, a teacher aide at the Marcus Whitman Central School District, will be honored with the New York State Senate Liberty Medal on Thursday, August 29. The prestigious award, the highest civilian honor bestowed by the New York State Senate, is reserved for individuals who have performed exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts.
The recognition comes after an incident on May 15, 2024, when Boyer, working in the Middlesex Valley Primary School cafeteria, saved a student’s life. Upon noticing the child choking, Boyer swiftly performed the Heimlich maneuver, successfully dislodging the obstruction and ensuring the student’s safety.
Senator Pam Helming, who will present the award during the district-wide opening day assembly, praised Boyer’s actions as a testament to the dedication and care educators provide every day. “Wendy’s courage in a moment of crisis is truly commendable and exemplifies the highest standards of public service,” Senator Helming said.
The award presentation is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. at the Marcus Whitman Central School District in Rushville, NY. Superintendent Dr. Christopher Brown and district staff will join in honoring Boyer’s heroic actions during the assembly.
