The FAA has doubled its enforcement cases against Boeing, with half of the 16 pending cases opened since a door plug blew off a 737 Max midflight in January. The incident occurred during an Alaska Airlines flight, causing a hole in the plane but no major injuries.
The National Transportation Safety Board hearing revealed that the accident was caused by bolts not being replaced after maintenance. The FAA’s increased oversight follows criticism of its lax regulation of Boeing after two deadly Max crashes in 2018 and 2019.
Boeing is redesigning door plugs to ensure proper securing before closure, with plans to retrofit existing 737s within a year. The FAA continues to increase inspections to enhance safety standards.
