The Chicago White Sox have tied the American League record for consecutive losses. They dropped their 21st straight game with a 5-1 defeat against the Oakland Athletics on Monday night. Max Schuemann’s two-run single in the fourth inning sealed the game, extending the White Sox’s painful streak. This skid matches the longest in the AL since the Baltimore Orioles’ infamous 1988 run.
The White Sox have not won a game since July 10, falling to a dismal 27-88 record. They are on track to record 124 losses, which would be the worst in modern baseball since the 1899 Cleveland Spiders. Held to one run or none 32 times this season, Chicago’s struggles have been exacerbated since the All-Star break, contributing 16 losses to this streak.
“It’s 21 in a row, it sucks, it’s painful, it hurts,” lamented Chicago manager Pedro Grifol. Despite the team’s efforts, they face an uphill battle to break the streak and restore their season.
